When I was a kid Christmas was fucking mayhem. Regular readers will be familiar, for example, with the great Subbuteo meltdown of Christmas 1990.

A prevailing state of psychodrama engulfed festivities in the Delaney household. Alcohol and recreational drugs fuelled the dynamic.

A big change happened for me personally around Christmas 1989 when I realised that if I got as pissed as my older brothers, then the situation would cease to seem quite so scary. It was a case of ‘if you can’t beat them join them.’ I joined them when I was about 14 and didn’t look back for the next 26 years.
